Cassini Cosmic Dust Analyser: Composition of Dust at Saturn
نویسندگان
چکیده
We discuss issues involved with interpreting time-offlight mass spectra (TOFMS) obtained by the Chemical Analyser subsystem of the Cassini Cosmic Dust Analyser (CDA). We use an in-house ion dynamics code specifically written for CDA which helps us to understand and constrain the initial impact plasma ion kinetic energy and angular distributions. We also present some typical results obtained from within the Saturnian system. We find that particles predominantly consist of water ice (manifesting itself in the TOFMS as hydronium ions, with varying numbers of water molecules attached) and minor silicate impurities. Some ammonia may also be present.

The allure of the ringed planets
One of the most enduring symbols of space exploration is a planet surrounded by a ring. This symbol inspires a celestial context: nothing on Earth is like it. My own fascination with space began when first I saw Saturn and its rings through a small telescope. The study of planets and rings has become my lifelong vocation. What a wonderful surprise that the ringed planets are just as beautiful a...
متن کاملOrigins of Solar System Dust Beyond Jupiter
The measurements of cosmic interplanetary dust by the instruments on board the Pioneer 10 and 11 spacecraft contain the dynamical signature of dust generated by Edgeworth-Kuiper Belt objects, as well as short period Oort Cloud comets and short period Jupiter family comets. While the dust concentration detected between Jupiter and Saturn is mainly due to the cometary components, the dust outside...
متن کاملDust-charging Processes in Plasma Environments
The Cosmic Dust Analyzer aboard the Cassini spacecraft consists of a several targets as well as a photomultiplier tube which provide information upon collision with ambient dust particles in Saturn’s magnetosphere. Information includes particle mass, velocity, chemical composition, and charge. The focus of this report is the charge of the dust particles; specifically, the processes by which the...

متن کاملMapping Magnetospheric Equatorial Regions at Saturn from Cassini Prime Mission Observations
Saturn’s rich magnetospheric environment is unique in the solar system, with a large number of active magnetospheric processes and phenomena. Observations of this environment from the Cassini spacecraft has enabled the study of a magnetospheric system which strongly interacts with other components of the saturnian system: the planet, its rings, C.S.
